Creating a Safe Home for Aging in Place

7 min read

Aging in place — staying in your own home safely — is the wish of the vast majority of older adults. A handful of practical changes makes it realistic for far longer than most families expect.

Floor by floor

Remove loose rugs and trailing cords, add non-slip mats in bathrooms, and install grab bars by toilets and showers. Motion-sensor night lights on the bedroom-to-bathroom route prevent the most common night falls.

Kitchen and medication

Move everyday items to waist-height shelves. Use a weekly pill organizer — or a timed dispenser if memory is a concern — and keep an up-to-date medication list on the fridge for emergency crews.

Peace of mind

A wearable emergency button, smart locks for family visitors, and a regular check-in call go a long way. And when the time comes that more help is needed, home care can step in without a move.
